Dept to ensure UPSR not affected by flood

KOTA KINABALU: The State Education Department will take the necessary measures to ensure that Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) will run smoothly today despite Sunday’s flash floods which hit the state capital and other districts.

Its director, James Alip, said only seven schools, namely SK Kibabaig, SK Sugut, SK Limbanak and St Aloysius in Penampang; Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) St Philip and St Catherine in Inanam; and SK Rampayan Laut in Menggatal, were affected by the flash floods but as of yesterday, the situation was under control.

“The water level at several affected schools had started to subside yesterday and we can confirm that the UPSR will carry on without any problems.

“However, we will take every the necessary measures and precautions to ensure students who will be sitting for their UPSR will not be affected by any flood,” he said yesterday.

According to Alip, among the measures that would be taken by the Education Department is to move students to safer locations so they could continue to sit for their examination.

“We have also advised teachers and school managements to monitor their areas and to give their full cooperation to the authorities such as the police and the Fire and Rescue Department if such a disaster would occur again,” he said.

Alip also advised parents to refer to the Examinations and Assessment District Education Office on updates or inquiries on the situation.

Meanwhile, Alip said about 46,366 students would be sitting for their UPSR this year at 1,095 centers.

The UPSR will be held simultaneously throughout the country today and will end on September 12.
