KIULU: The Kiulu assemblyman, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, yesterday challenged members of Koperasi Pukak Berhad to perform and become an exemplary example to other cooperatives.

“The cooperative’s board of directors must be efficient and trustworthy in leading the members, and I hope that they would work hard and be role models to other cooperatives in the state.

“Your hard work would help to lift up Kiulu’s name,” he said, when launching the cooperative’s annual general meeting, yesterday.

The cooperative, which was launched on December 1, 1977, has a total of 385 members and divides its businesses into three fields, namely sundry shops, construction materials and fuel, and last year’s audited statement of account showed that they have made gross sales of RM925,667.55.

Joniston also called on the members to express and exchange views during the meeting, adding that the secret to success for a cooperative is to have trust, transparency and cooperation between one another.

“It would also be good for members to expand the business and look at other opportunities, such as swiftlets farming, or taking advantage of the beautiful flora and fauna here for tourism, such as homestay, that could improve the people’s socio-economy,” he said.

He also said that the members should be alert to the long-term planning and development in the area, such as the road construction that would go through Kampung Pukak, which he believes could bring beneficial spillovers to the people in the area.
