PENAMPANG: The police here have seized 351 modified computer sets in efforts to curb illegal cyber gambling.

District police chief DSP Ratan Kumar Singh said for the month of July, police from both D7 branch (gambling/vice/secret societies) of the Sabah Police Headquarters in Kepayan and Penampang had carried out 15 raids at illegal cyber outlets in Penampang and Putatan.

Fifty-seven people, including 21 women, aged 20 to 50 have been detained for alleged involvement in illegal cyber gambling, according to Singh.

He added that apart from the 351 modified computer sets that were confiscated, police have also seized RM5,717 in cash, believed to be profits earned from the illegal cyber operations.

All the cases are being investigated under Section 4B (a) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953, which carries a fine of between RM20,000 and RM200,000 or five years’ jail on conviction.

Singh said police would be intensifying their efforts to curb illegal cyber gambling activities in the districts of Penampang and Putatan and urged the public to assist the police in the fight against illegal activities around their areas.

He thanked the public for their continuous cooperation in providing information to the police and hoped that such cooperation will continue in the future.
