SANDAKAN: The Danum Valley Borneo Rhino Sanctuary (DVBRS) was handed over to a local-based non-governmental organisation on August 7 at Danum Valley in Lahad Datu.
Datuk Dr Junaidi Payne, director of the Borneo Rhino Alliance (BORA), received the handing over of the DVBRS from the deputy director of Sabah Forestry Department, Fidelis Edwin Bajau, witnessed by several partners, such as the manager of Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC), Jikos Gidiman, and chief executive officer of Yayasan Sime Darby, Puan Hajjah Yatelah Zainal Abidin.
The DVBRS cost RM1.4 million and was funded through donations from the forestry companies amounting to RM1 million through the Sabah Forestry Department, RM250,000 from the Yayasan Sime Darby, RM100,000 from the Yayasan Sabah through the Danum Valley Management Committee, and RM50,000 from BORA through their fund-raising efforts.
During the handing over ceremony, Bajau congratulated the contractor, Buildtech Enterprise Contractor, for completing the project within nine months from its inception in October 2013.
