TAWAU: A motorcyclist was killed after he collided with another motorcyclist at Kampung Pendekar, Bergosong Road on Sebatik Island about 6.15 am on Monday.
District police chief ACP Awang Besar Dullah said the deceased was identified as Nasaruddin bin Hamsah, 17, while his pillion rider, Mohd Nazrul Abdullah, also 17, suffered only minor injuries.
He said the other motorcyclist, identified as Rahmat bin Nurdin, 22, who works as a lorry assistant, had sustained serious injuries.
Awang said the victim died due to a head injury while the other rider broke his right hand and suffered internal bleeding in the stomach.
He said investigation revealed that the deceased and his pillion rider were heading towards Wallace Bay while the other rider was heading towards Bergosong.
The accident occurred when the deceased tried to avoid damaged sections of the road and in doing so, veered into the opposite lane and collided with the other motorcyclist.
As a result of the collision, the deceased was thrown onto the road and severely injured his head. He died while on the way to the hospital.
Awang added the deceased and his pillion rider were reportedly not wearing helmets and was not in possession of a driving license.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
