SANDAKAN: A spinach plant that normally grows up to about 30cm has grown to four metres (more than 12 feet) tall at Rumah Warga Emas Sri Harapan, Mile 5, here.
The spinach, which was planted by Maria, a worker at the old folks home two months ago is continuing to grow.
It was named ‘Pop-eye spinach’ by Mohd Kassim Abdul Rahman who called The Borneo Post yesterday,
According to Mohd Kassim, he had never seen a spinach growing to four metres tall in his 72 years of life.
He said the spinach was planted together with several chili plants but only a stalk of the spinach grew and it has reached four metres tall in two months.
“Although the spinach is seldom watered, it has a thick and solid 51 mm diameter stem,” said Mohd Kassim, who wished to see the spinach continue to grow.
The public can see the spinach at Rumah Warga Emas Sri Harapan near Cheshire Home, at Mile 5 here.
