KOTA KINABALU: Six illegal cyber gambling centres around the state capital were raided by the police during an operation on Tuesday night.
The raids were carried out simultaneously by a police team from the commercial crime investigation D7 branch (Gambling/Vice/Secret Societies) of the Sabah Police Headquarters in Kepayan, Kota Kinabalu and Penampang police.
DSP Wong Yuen Chuan, who led the raid, said police stormed six premises around the state capital at around 10.30pm on Tuesday and detained 14 persons, who included eight caretakers and six customers, aged between 20 to 46 years old.
Police also confiscated 216 modified computer sets and RM2,964 in cash from the raids.
Wong said the raids were made after police received tip-offs from the public that illegal gambling centres were operating in those areas.
“Police detained 14 people, including six people believed to be customers at the premises during the raid,” he said, adding that eight caretakers from the premises were also brought to the police station to facilitate investigation.
He said the 216 modified computer sets that were confiscated had been taken to the Karamunsing police headquarters for further investigation.
The cases would be investigated under Section 4B (a) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953.
Wong said police would be intensifying their efforts to curb illegal cyber gambling activities in the state and urged for public cooperation to help fight illegal gambling activities around their areas.
