KOTA KIANABALU: Sabah Forestry Department’s invention, ‘Reduced Impact Logging’ (RIL), has been nominated for the Chief Minister’s Innovation Award (AIKM).

A seven-member AIKM evaluation committee assessed the invention on Thursday, evaluating its innovativeness, effectiveness, significance and relevance.

Forestry director Datuk Sam Manan, in a press statement here yesterday, said RIL comprises a series of forest harvesting techniques used by the department, with minimal impact on the environment.

The techniques are divided into three main operation stages, namely ‘Pre Harvesting’, ‘Harvesting’ and ‘Post Harvesting’.

The RIL for Tropica Dipterocarp forest was the first of its kind in the world and has been implemented in managing Deramakot Forest Reserve since 1989, Sam said.

AIKM is the most prestigious award for innovation in the State, offering a prize of RM200,000, a trophy and certificate of recognition.
