KOTA KINABALU: A local man faced three counts of cheating two women involving RM7,300 at the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday.

Mohd Afendy Jeckrey, 26, pleaded not guilty before the deputy registrar of the High Court Ryan Sangiraan Rayner Jr, to the three charges framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

The indictment carries a jail term of up to 10 years and whipping and is also liable to a fine, upon conviction.

On the first count, the undefended accused was alleged to have deceived a woman of RM5,800 by saying that he could help to process a car purchase at an automotive shop at Jalan Penampang at 1.30pm on September 29, 2013.

The second and the third charges accused him of cheating another woman of RM500 and RM1,000, respectively, as the deposit payment for a car purchase at Kampung Dabak in Penampang on August 4 and 7, 2013, respectively.

Rayner Jr, who presided as a magistrate, set April 22 this year to re-mention the case and released the accused on a bail of RM9,000 for all the charges with two local sureties.

In an unrelated case, a local 26-year-old man was jailed a total of 19 months by the same court for two counts of possessing drugs and a charge of consuming syabu.

On the first count, Nasrullah Taib pleaded guilty to possessing 0.04 grams of syabu at a house at Kampung Lok Bonu in Putatan on September 27, 2013, and was sentenced to jail for five months.

He was convicted under Section 12 (3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952 which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or a maximum jail of five years or both, upon conviction.

On the second count, he was sentenced to another 10 months’ imprisonment for having 1.77 grams of cannabis at the same time and place.

The offence was framed under Section 6 of the DDA 1952 which is punishable by a maximum fine of RM100,000 or a jail term of up to five years or both, upon conviction.

On the third charge, Nasrullah received four months’ jail after he admitted to consuming syabu and his urine samples tested positive for the drug at Penampang police station on September 27, 2013.

He was charged under Section 15 (1) (a) of the same Act which carries a fine of not less than RM5,000 or a jail term of up to two years, upon conviction.

The court ordered him to serve his jail terms concurrently.

Meanwhile, his co-accused local Aiman Weshak, 26, pleaded not guilty to the charges of possessing syabu and cannabis at the same time and place.
