KOTA KINABALU: Two of 10 new suspects held by the police to facilitate investigations into the recent drive-by shooting incident around Kota Kinabalu have been released on police bail.
According to the duo’s counsel, PJ Perira, he was informed by the investigating officer of the case that his clients, aged 41 and 48 years old, were released without any conditions.
Counsel Perira said he had requested for withdrawal of an application for criminal revision, which was to be heard at the High Court yesterday. Judge Azhahari Kamal Ramli struck out the application as there was no objection from the prosecution.
Reportedly, the two men were remanded to assist police in their investigations under Section 32 (2) of the Arms Act 1960.
Perira said they were arrested on February 16, at 12.30am and first brought before the registrar of the Sessions Court for a remand order as investigations could not be completed within 24 hours as stipulated under Section 28 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The drive-by shooting incident that took place between 11.45pm on January 10 until 6am on January 11 was said to have caused unnecessary panic to the public.
It was reported that the group armed with what police believed were air guns loaded with marbles, had moved around the state capital in three vehicles shooting at 46 premises along their way in the city centre, Inanam, Luyang and Penampang. Among the premises affected were banks, hotels, beauty salons, restaurants, offices, a petrol station, car showrooms and shopping malls.
No known casualty was reported in the incident, which reportedly brought about some degree of panic and apprehension in the social media, Facebook and WhatsApp.
