KOTA KINABALU: An elderly pedestrian was killed while a motorcyclist and the pillion rider both suffered serious injuries in a road accident along Kota Kinabalu-Papar Road, near Kampung Dumpil, Putatan here on Monday.
The pedestrian, identified as Osman Jailani, 82, from Kampung Dumpil, succumbed to his injuries at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital about four hours after a four-wheel-drive vehicle knocked him while crossing the road around 6pm.
It was said that the driver of the four-wheel-drive vehicle that was believed heading towards Kinarut from the city centre, immediately fled the scene.
It was also said that a motorcycle that was tailing from behind skidded on the road as the rider tried to avoid hitting the victim who was lying in the middle of the road.
Both the rider and pillion rider were thrown a couple of metres away from the scene.
All three victims were immediately rushed to the hospital.
Osman, who suffered a broken leg and head injury, however, died at the hospital around 10pm.
Both the motorcyclist and pillion rider sustained face and body injuries and are reported to be in stable condition.
Meanwhile, Penampang police chief DSP Ratan Kumar Singh yesterday confirmed the incident, adding the police were still investigating to identify the four-wheel-drive vehicle.
He urged anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward to assist the police in their investigation under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
