Best UPSR results for Sabah since 2008

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s achievement in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) this year is the best since 2008, according to Education Director Datuk Jame Alip.

Jame, who announced the results here yesterday, said the average grade achieved by Sabah schools this year was 2.76, an improvement from last year’s 2.83.

He said that out of the 45,491 UPSR candidates in the state this year, 48.66 per cent (22,136 candidates) attained all C’s for all the subjects they sat for.

This showed a rise of about 1.49% from 47.17% last year when 21,370 candidates sat for the primary school evaluation test.

The percentage of students attaining grades D and E in all the subjects they sat for dropped from 8.66% (2012) to 7.81% (2013).

Meanwhile, national schools in Sabah scored better in four subjects, namely in English, Mathematics, Science and Bahasa Melayu (comprehension).

The total percentage of students attaining Grade A, Grade B and Grade C in Bahasa Melayu (Comprehension) this year was 87.21% while last year, the percentage of students attaining the same result was 83.21%.

The percentage of students attaining the same grades in English was 59.28% this year, an improvement from 56.08% last year. At the same time, the percentage of students attaining grades A, B and C in Mathematics and Science this year was 70.83% and 72.91% respectively, which represent little change from 70.52% and 71.20% last year.

The perfromance by Sabah students from national schools in the Bahasa Melayu (writing) subject dropped from 73.50% last year to 72.8% this year.

Meanwhile, national-type Chinese schools performed better in five subjects this year, namely the Bahasa Melayu SJKC in both comprehension and in writing, in Bahasa Cina for both the comprehension paper and the writing paper, as well as in Science.

Their achievement however dropped in the English and Mathematics subjects.

In the terms of excellence, Jame said a total of 1,197 candidates attained all A’s in the subjects they sat for this year.

“Out of the 45,491 candidates who sat for the examination, 1,067 from national schools succeeded in getting 5A’s while 130 candidates from SJKC attained 7A’s. Last year, out of the 45,301 candidates sitting for the examination, only 864 SK students attained 5A’s while 171 from the SJKC attained 7A’s,” he said.

Jame then advised students and parents that the results were obtainable at their respective schools since 10am yesterday.

“Schools, candidates and parents are reminded that the application to review their results could be made within 30 days from the date of the result announcement and must be sent direct to the Examination Board. Application for review must arrive at the board before Dec 15,” he said.

Candidates can also get their results via short messaging service (SMS) by typing ‘mySMS 15888’. The service began operational since 10am yesterday.
