KOTA KINABALU: In conjunction with the 50th Malaysia Day, Kota Kinabalu City Hall will be accelerating efforts to instill cleanliness awareness among local citizens through collaboration with other local authorities in Sabah west coast areas.
A programme called Anti-Litterbug Patriots Campaign 2013 will see the combined effort of City Hall with the local authorities of Penampang, Papar, Putatan, Ranau, Kota Belud, and Tuaran in creating greater impact on local citizens on the importance of making cleanliness their top priority.
A convoy of 50 vehicles involving 200 volunteers, civil servants and university students will be flagged off at Padang Merdeka on September 15, and will proceed through Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Papar, Putatan, and onward to Sabah Tea Garden, Ranau, Kota Belud, and Tuaran before returning to the city the following day.
Anti-litterbug patriots will be distributing flyers and spreading the words on cleanliness at all their stops, besides having the elected representatives of each town present to deliver a word or two, among others.
At every stop, the Mayor himself and the relevant district officers will be signing a memorandum, as a sign of commitment of collaboration between the local authorities, which will then be handed over to the State Secretary, Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman, at the end of the journey.
The programme is one of the three that will be launched simultaneously at Padang Merdeka on September 15, in conjunction with City Hall’s celebration of the 50th Malaysia Day, and will be flagged off by assistant minister to the Chief Minister cum minister in charge of the City Hall, Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah.
The second programme, the Patriotic, Healthy and Active Run is a collaboration between City Hall and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, aimed at introducing a healthy way of celebrating the unity among Malaysians during its annual Malaysia Day celebration.
City Hall is encouraging Malaysians of all ages to participate in the 4km run, which is free of charge. Although it is not a race, participants who complete the run in one hour will be entitled to a lucky draw and a stand a chance to win more than 50 attractive prizes including a Samsung Galaxy Tab, camera, bicycle, electrical goods, sports equipment and many more
The run will be flagged off at Padang Merdeka, and will proceed through Jalan KK By-pass, Jalan Bukit Nenas, and Jalan Istana, before ending back at the Padang Merdeka.
The first 3,000 participants to come to Padang Merdeka in their sports attire between 6.15am to 7.15 am will also be given free t-shirts.
During the programme, various other activities at the venue had also been planned out, including exhibitions and free health screenings.
Meanwhile, the third programme, the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Hari Malaysia programme is City Hall’s collaboration with the Sabah Information Department, where a convoy of 10 vehicles would be going around the city broadcasting messages of unity and patriotism.
A celebration will follow after the convoy, with a series of performances and entertainment by local artistes and dance groups.
The Mayor has announced that a few stretches of roads in the city will be closed on September 15 from 6am to 12pm to make way for the Patriotic, Healthy, and Active Run, namely, Lorong Dewan, Jalan Padang, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Bukit Nenas, and Jalan Istana.
The Jalan Padang bus terminal will also be closed during the said period. Therefore, all buses, taxis, and chartered motorcars that are normally stationed at the terminal will relocated to around Bandaran Berjaya and Kampung Air areas. Road users and the public are urged to follow the instructions of enforcement officers who will be on duty.
