TAMPARULI: Tuaran United Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Party (Upko) needs to fulfill all promises given to the people during the recent general election (GE) campaign period, said its divisional chief Datuk Madius Tangau.

Speaking to party members at the tri-annual general meeting at Dewan Tun Hamdan yesterday, Tangau said the 13th GE this year was crucial for the division but finally won the parliamentary seat, even though facing a senior politician who was one of the respected leaders of the party.

“As we promised in the 13th general election, education will be our main priority. I have appointed someone to lead this to ensure that our future generation will be able to have a proper education.

“We also want the people in the Tuaran parliamentary to have more income to improve their economic situation. With the help of the various ministries, we will engage agricultural activities to create more opportunities in every constituency under this parliamentary,” he said.

Tangau also said Upko was committed in helping about 49 villages in Tamparuli who are having problems in their land application for village status.

In terms of welfare assistance, the Upko secretary-general hopes the number of hardcore poor in Tuaran would decrease, especially after the implementation of various activities to develop their economy.

“We will ensure that all the needy people in Tuaran who needs assistance will receive it, while those who are not entitled for the welfare assistance will be disqualified from applying.

“Although we are targeting a smaller number of hardcore poor in Tuaran, we will continue to help those who really need assistance from the government, such as single mothers,” added Tangau.

He also reiterated the incident of Upko deputy president Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Bumburing who left the party to join the opposition and stood as candidate in the 13th GE as a lesson for the party to stay united.

He said Upko is very clear in its political struggle; that it will work sincerely for the benefit of the locals.
