KOTA KINABALU: The Petagas flyover is safe for use, state deputy Public Works Department (PWD) director Amrullah Kamal said.
Responding to a public complaint, Amrullah said PWD had conducted an inspection at the flyover and found that there were no cracks as reported.
“It is only superficial and there is nothing to fear, the flyover is safe for use as it was all done according to specification,” he said.
It was reported on Tuesday that a road user spotted cracks on the KKIA-Kepayan flyover, and urged the relevant authorities to carry out an inspection at the site.
The concerned citizen stated that he noticed the cracks as he uses the route frequently and was worried of untoward incidents should the authorities ignore the matter.
“The cracks may not be big enough to alert the authorities to do something about it. But I’m worried that if they leave it be, lives will be at risk as the structure may someday become too weak to withstand the pressure.
“Considering also this is in the urban area and traffic flow and load get quite heavy, the authorities should at least inspect the structure consistently.
“We do not wish to see any structure collapse happen here in Kota Kinabalu. We should learn from other states where such incidents had happened,” said the complainant.
He urged the relevant authority to inspect the matter and take the necessary action.
