KOTA KINABALU: Every Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) division should hold their annual general meeting (AGM) and propose their desired leaders to contest for the party top posts, in accordance with democratic procedure, said party president Datuk Liew Vui Keong.
Nonetheless, Liew is reminding nominated leaders that the supreme council had reached a consensus and passed a resolution to leave the top two posts, namely, party president and deputy president, uncontested.
Liew said this when asked to comment on the current situation leading up to LDP party congress and election on October 20 here yesterday.
LDP vice president Datuk Pang Yuk Ming recently announced that he intended to seek a higher post, but whether he would vie for the presidential post would depend on the wishes of the grassroots members.
On Sunday, the divisional chiefs of LDP Luyang, Inanam, Tanjung Aru and Petagas announced that they would nominate the party’s incumbent secretary-general, Datuk Teo Chee Kang, for the presidential post, and Datuk Chin Su Phin to retain his incumbent post as LDP deputy president.
Gum-Gum division in Sandakan has also expressed its support for Teo to contest for party president.
Liew said these shows of support were not an issue, adding that each division is currently holding their respective AGM to pass resolutions, which was a democratic procedure.
“As for the party leadership, it will be decided by the 800 party congress delegates in due time.”
Liew added the party divisions would be nominating their candidates at this stage, but whether the nominees would contest was another matter.
“Let them (the nominees) decide when the time comes.”
He added that this showed the party practised democracy when the divisions nominated their desired leaders.
On whether he would contest for party president, Liew reiterated that it was the resolution of the supreme council to leave the top two posts uncontested.
“I’m abiding by their (supreme council’s) decision.”
However, Liew said he would disclose his stand when the time comes.
