KOTA KINABALU: Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Yick Nam Inanam, was officially recognized as a litter-free school by City Hall here yesterday.
Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir said with the recognition, there are now 79 litter-free zones in the city, including the school.
“The litter-free zones that we have created in the city include litter-free resorts, litter-free villages, litter-free construction sites, litter-free commercial centre, litter-free offices, litter-free higher learning institutions, litter-free college, litter-free banks, litter-free schools, litter-free towns, litter-free condominiums, litter-free hawker sites, litter-free clinics, litter-free golf resorts, litter-free kindergarten and litter-free lake.
“SJKC Yick Nam is the 32nd school receiving this recognition and we hope students and teachers will become our agents to spread awareness of the importance of the anti-litterbug campaign,” he said.
Madingkir’s speech was read by City Hall director-general Datuk Yeo Boon Hai.
He reiterated the campaign was an ongoing process where the recognition could be withdrawn at anytime if any of the participants were littering in the specific zones.
During the event, Madingkir also appreciated SJKC Yick Nam’s effort to support City Hall’s campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags in the state capital.
Since the launching of the ‘No Plastic Bags’ campaign on 7th Jun 2010, a total of 296 premises had participated in the effort, including SJKC Yick Nam.
He is calling for more parties to be part of the campaign to ensure the cleanliness of Kota Kinabalu city.
Present at the event yesterday were the headmaster of SJKC Yick Nam, Heng Yee Sing and the chairman of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) Ricky Lee.
