Its principal Elizabeth Mak said the achievement was the initiative and efforts of the school teachers, students and parents by using 55,224 drink cans.

“About 600 participants worked hard at this project for the past three weeks where the drinking cans were collected since early this year.

“We also received funds from the assemblyman of this area, Datuk Arifin Mohd Arif to make this plan a reality. We also want to thank a number of government and private agencies and also individuals who have contributed funds for this project,” she said, adding that the achievement was a recognition for the school in such a patriotic project.

Mak said this to reporters during the nomination event at the school, which was officiated by Arifin.

Also present to witness the event was chief executive officer of Kopeks, Buvil Angkui.

Earlier, Elizabeth said SMK St. Patrick had previously made the school proud by being listed in the Malaysia Book of Records in 2009 for creating the longest national flag, the Jalur Gemilang using mineral bottles.

She said the initiative was one of many activities that had been organized by the school to show their patriotism.

“We also believe this activity will create a closer bond between the parents, teachers and students, apart from our main objective for it to be a platform in expressing patriotism,” she added.

Meanwhile, Arifin who is also an Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department said in his speech that the activity was a positive example that should be shared with other schools in the state.

He believes that such activity can be a bridge and platform for a stronger unity.

An officer from the Malaysia Book of Records, Suhaila Shamsuddin was also present at the event to sanction the record.
