KOTA KINABALU: Amy Search is no conjurer but if he were one, he would instil love in all the people to extinguish negativity, and conquer the hearts of Malaysians today.

“It’s simple. I want Malaysians to love each other,” said the rock legend during one of his walkabout stops throughout Kota Kinabalu at Jesselton Point, yesterday.

“If you don’t have love in your hearts, you are just a piece of dead meat in this world,” said Amy who then broke out into a verse of White Snake’s “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City”. “We are losing the love.”

Instead of the norms of speeches and parades that marked Malaysia Day, Suhaimi Abdul Rahman and his team approached it differently by spreading the message of unity and patriotism through #samasama, his brainchild initiative.

He noted that the spirit has wavered amongst the people, especially amongst the youths, and strongly opposed the negativity that is widely spread through the social media today.

“Social media should be used wisely. Commenting swiftly on posts without knowing what the person is talking about would probably not affect you today, but could come back to haunt you someday,” said Amy.

Amy, who has been in the industry for over three decades, flew over to Sabah because he felt passionate about spreading the message amongst the people.

“Our forefathers made sacrifices and took many years to develop a united Malaysia that is admired by people from all over the world, but many of the happenings today seem intent to crush what they have worked to gain all this while,” said the concerned rocker.

“Many people have a habit of pointing out the bad things but have a hard time appreciating the harmony and peace that still exists here, compared to other countries.

“I was born a year after independence day in 1958. In those days, feasting on meat and poultry once a month was a luxury in my family but today we eat it every day,” lamented Amy who was reminded of those days where his late policeman father struggled to provide for the family.

“It’s not the gesture of giving these flags out, but the lasting impact and memory they would gain in reminding them of this significant occasion,” added the rock star while highlighting that he wanted to use the prominence that he has gained to give back to society.

“Every year, my family would buy flags to celebrate the occasion. I am doing this for my children as well as for the future generation and in order to do that, we need a stable country,” said Amy.

“This year, my daughter and I thought, why don’t we give away flags to help promote the celebration,” he said.

“So we thought it was cool and something different compared to a concert.”

Amy and his daughter, Nabila started giving away flags during the recent Merdeka Day in Kuala Lumpur.

In Sabah, his #samasama movement brought over 10,000 flags, dispersing them yesterday at University Malaysia Sabah, Likas Sports Complex, Likas Bay, Tanjung Aru Beach and other local shopping complexes, here.

Amy, who originally intended to visit Sarawak for the same cause, had to cancel the trip to return to Kuala Lumpur for the remaining preparations of his two-hour solo concert in Singapore.

The rocker is also expected to release his first modern rock solo album, after 13 years of hiatus, later in December.

“I want to bring my old fans through a new journey and gain existing fans through an updated concept,” said Amy about his 10-song album.
