Suspected drunk driver crashes van into RMAF bus

LABUAN: A 40-year-old man, who was believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol, rammed his Toyota van into the rear of a Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) bus, yesterday.

Labuan deputy police chief DSP Douglas Taong said the incident occurred around 12.30am at Jalan Tun Mustapha, near the traffic light at Kampung Jawa.

“The RMAF bus had stopped at the traffic light, waiting for the green light. The bus was from town heading to its base at Membidai.

“During the stop, the van driver who is from Sarawak, rammed his van into the rear of the bus, causing damage to both vehicles. Due to the impact, the van driver was stuck to the driver’s seat and was rescued by personnel from the Labuan Fire and Rescue Department.

“The van driver suffered serious face and head injuries and was immediately sent to Labuan Hospital for emergency treatment, while the RMAF bus driver and passengers escaped unhurt,” he said.

The van driver was tested and had alcohol consumption in excess of the allowed limit to drive on the road.
