KOTA KINABALU: The Good Shepherd Welfare Centre through its Seri Murni Crisis Centre (SMCC) and the Animation Team of Pusat Belia Youth-PREP Alamesra recently hosted the first of a series of campaign against rape.
Held on July 26 at five selected malls in Kota Kinabalu, the 16-member team caught the attention of curious mall-goers in the midst of last-minute Hari Raya Aidilfitri shopping with their display of dances and freeze flashmobs.
The objective of the campaign was to raise public awareness and support for an end to rape in Malaysia, as well as to demand for state accountability to effectively address rape and other issues related to violence against women.
This public action campaign was mooted by the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG) as a result of the increasingly high incidence of rape cases in the country.
In Sabah, the campaign was supported by Good Shepherd Welfare Centre, Sabah Women Action Resources Group (SAWO) and Junior Chamber International (JCI) Intan.
