LABUAN: A 38-year-old foreigner faces death by hanging if found guilty of smuggling 97.2g of Syabu into Labuan on July 13.

Labuan Police chief Superintendant Adzhar Othman yesterday said that based on a public tip, they managed to arrest the man at about 11am as soon as the suspect arrived at Labuan International Ferry Terminal here.

“We conducted a body check and we found the drug inside his pocket and underwear. The estimate value of the drug is around RM32,000.

“After we questioned him, he disclosed that he took the drug from Semporna and used a speed boat to Labuan to distribute the drug here before he was detained.

“The suspect, who also tested positive for drugs, is now being remanded for four days and his case would be investigated under Section 39B Dangerous Drug Act 1952,” he said, adding that if the suspect was found guilty he might be sentenced to death.

Meanwhile, on July 14, Adzhar led some 18 police officers and personnel including the peace lady unit for their high profile policing at Labuan Walk where the Ramadan Bazaar is located.

The peace lady unit managed to register some 30 women to be their partners in crime-prevention activities here.

Adzhar said that they met and approached over hundred visitors to the bazaar where they had handed over some goody bags containing information about crime-prevention to the stall operators and visitors.

“We are committed to building a ‘bridge’ between the police and the society in working together to fight crime activities,” he said.

Subsequently, during the breaking of fast on the same day, Labuan Member of Parliament, Datuk Rozman Isli handed over some RM12,500 to Adzhar who is also the patron of the Labuan Police Family Association, Surau Ibnu Sina and Labuan Police Welfare and Recreation Club.

In his speech, Rozman said that he appreciated the role played by the police here to maintain the security and peace in the island.

Some 100 police officers and personnel attended the programme.
