KOTA KINABALU: Luyang assemblyman Hiew King Cheu has vowed to find ways to have closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at shops and residential areas in Foh Sang to deter crime activities.
Hiew is also urging the people to be aware of their surroundings and be cautious in order to avoid falling victim to criminals and bad hats.
He said this after visiting the family of 66-year-old Vincent Peng who was killed when attempting to stop a carjacker from driving off with his Toyota Vigo vehicle.
The businessman was said to have alighted from his vehicle with the engine still running to open his house gate when the carjacker entered the car and started to drive away.
He tried to stop the carjacker by holding on to the vehicle’s door handle at the driver’s side, but he was dragged 24 metres away before he was dislodged from the vehicle, fell to the ground and died.
Hiew said the public must not leave their vehicle engine running and doors unlocked when they leave their vehicles, even for a short while. He said many have blamed the police for the carjacking incident but the people have the responsibility to look after their own safety as well.
“There are people who ask why the police do not go on foot patrol. When the police do their patrol here, they (the criminals) will ‘hentam’ (commit criminal activities) elsewhere.”
Hence, Hiew urged the public to always be alert and take safety measures to prevent such unfortunate incidents from happening.
