KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno Youth deputy chief Shahelmy Yahya yesterday lodged a police report that a Facebook account had purportedly been created under his name to tarnish his political image.
He said the creator of the Facebook account had uploaded statements containing seditious elements.
According to Shahelmy, the Facebook account created under the name ‘Shahelmy Yahya’ was found to have uploaded contents that have political, religious and racist elements which may impact negatively on other Facebook users, especially the younger generation.
Shahelmy had also expressed concern that such an act may affect his credibility as the deputy chief of Sabah Umno Youth.
“I was surprised when friends brought up comments pertaining to posts made on Facebook. After investigating the matter, I found out that the Facebook account was not mine and contained ill intentions of a person who does not even have the courtesy of using his own real name but instead used my name. Hence, we decided to lodge a police report, which we did at the Karamunsing police headquarters here,” said Shahelmy.
Commenting further on the matter, Shahelmy said that there may be some quarters attempting to incite hatred among Umno Youth members as the postings were also used to make attacks on other politicians using the social media.
“We hope the Malaysia Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will take heed of such wrongdoing and take the necessary action against such irresponsible quarters.
He also urged the Facebook account holder concerned and the general public to refrain from committing such act as it is deemed unprofessional.
“Facebook should be used as a facility to help youngsters with many things. Please do not use it as a medium to spread lies and rumours which will affect the nation’s unity and harmony,” said Shahelmy.
