PUTATAN: Muslims in the state are urged to observe the spirit of Ramadhan by being kind and generous to those less fortunate than them.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said followers of Islam should take the opportunity to do more charity and help those in need during the fasting month.

“In the spirit of the holy Ramadhan al-Mubarak, let us all strengthen our ibadah, and let us also not forget about the less fortunate by giving to charity,” he said.

Musa said this in his speech for the Ramadhan Moon Sighting Ceremony at Al-Binuri Observation Centre at Tanjung Dumpil here, yesterday.

The text of his speech was delivered by Deputy Chief Minister cum Petagas assemblyman Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin.

Musa in his speech also called on the younger generation of Muslims to learn and be an expert in the studies of falak (astronomy), to honour and continue the legacy of early Muslim scholars renowned until today for their contribution in this field.

“It is important for the younger generation, as the human capital and leaders of the future, to take the lead in astronomy and revive the glory of the early Islam civilization. The success and greatness of the people of Islam in the past should serve as an example and inspiration for us to be an excellent, advanced community,” he said.

Moon sighting or Ruqyah Hilal Ramdhan is an official government event held concurrently across the country to determine the beginning of the fasting month.

Similar ceremony is also held to determine the date of Hari Raya.

There are at least 30 official locations for moon sighting in the country including Tanjung Dumpil.
