TAWAU: A bomb, believed to be a remnant from World War II, was discovered by a construction worker while carrying out excavation work at an open space near a specialist medical centre that is currently under construction at Hill Top near here yesterday afternoon.
Lim, the site contractor, said his workers discovered the bomb about 1.45pm yesterday while carrying out excavation work.
It is learnt that a fish pond is being built at the open space, which would turn into a recreation park catering to patients receiving treatment at the specialist medical centre.
Lim said his workers were curious on discovering the object and tried to scrape the surface but later Lim’s father confirmed that it was a bomb and immediately called the police.
When the police arrived to inspect the bomb, they made preparation to cordon off the area so that the bomb could be detonated safely.
According to them, this is the first time such a bomb was found in Tawau and they believed there could still be many bombs around that have yet to be discovered.
The bomb wasdetonated by the police bomb unit at 4.45pm yesterday.
