UMS clinches 10 golds, four silvers in KL competition

KOTA KINABALU: University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) achieved outstanding achievement in the recent International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2014 competition held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from May 8-10.

The university clinched an impressive 10 golds and four silvers in all the 14 submitted participations.

This achievement is one of the best to date in terms of success turnover since participating in this type of expos and competitions.

The successful UMS team owed their success to the unflinching support and encouragement from Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Harun bin Abdullah and the top management of UMS who constantly challenge their academic staff to always strive for excellence in all pursuance.

The 10 golden winners were from the School of Education and Social Development/Centre for Promotion of Knowledge and Language Learning whose research projects are Multiple-choice Questions (MCQ) Builder and Analyser for HEI/schools and Dyscalculia Screener for Primary School Students; School of Arts Studies (The Tuniring); School of Medicine (Novel Approach for Auto-Pneumothorax Simulator); School of International Tropical Forestry – ALITE (Tongkat Ali Tea); and TAEDTM: Tongkat Ali Extraction and Distillation System; School of Food Science and Nutrition – Instant Vege Spread; School of Engineering and Information Technology – GPS Enabled Driver Alert System for Online Vehicle Driver Physiological Monitoring; Evolvable Traffic Optimizer for Integrated Traffic Solution; Interactive Training Aid of Virtual Impact Test for impact Resistance Structures Design.

The four silver winners included participation from School of Medicine – Interactive Classification System in Medicine & Surgery; School of Food Science and Nutrition; School of Science and Technology – A Low Cost Metallo-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition Reactor System for the Preparation of Dual Functional Adsorbent-Catalyst Materials); and School of Arts Studies – AR Folktale-Riddle Book.

It is hoped that such inspiring success will continue to spur research and innovation amongst UMS researchers.

Besides inspiring and motivating future researchers, continued participation in expo and competitions such as ITEX, both at national and international levels, will continue to propel UMS to achieve greater international recognition and visibility to be among the leading universities of the world.
