KENINGAU: Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin has reminded the people not to be overly obsessed with measuring the progress and development of a country by counting how many skyscrapers (tall buildings) does Malaysia have.

He said development should be measured in line with the strengthening of spiritual values in each of its citizens so that they will not deviate from the track by producing superior human capital in the real sense of a developed country.

“To achieve unity is more complex because we need to understand the relationship and understand human psychology and calculations by the communities themselves,” he said at the Integration Night in conjunction the Orientation Programme for new Federal officers working in the state at Kampung Sinulihan Baru Sook here recently.

He said Malaysians of different races and religions should avoid disputes which could lead to a feud among themselves.

According to him, as a Malaysian community, they should always be proud of the environment they are in, the uniqueness of the community, as well as all the facilities they enjoy together in a peaceful country.

The people also have a degree tolerance to the various races and religious belief and ethnic groups.

Ellron said the peace that they were enjoying now would not have been achieved easily without efforts, sacrifices and struggles of their ancestors.

In this regard, he said, it was important for the present generation to uphold the struggles and sacrifices of their ancestors and predecessors at all times.

“The level of unity and tolerance is a unique attraction that the country has been seen as a model for other developing countries in building national unity and integration.

“I feel that the role of this unity should focus on the younger generation, especially from the school level and the contribution of parents in the upbringing of their children,” he said.

Also present at the event were Sabah Federal Secretary Dato Abu Bakar Hassan, Deputy Director General of the National Unity and Integration Department, Gandesan S / O Letchumanan, State National Unity and Integration Department Director, Delin Liet Anak Blaun, Heads of state and Federal Department  and local community leaders.
