KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib yesterday expressed hope that more people from the Chinese community will join the police force in the future.

He said that if more joined the police force, this would strengthen relationship among the various communities in the country.

According to Hamza, only about 174, or two percent, of the  9,062 officers and personnel serving in Sabah are from the Chinese community.

“Today’s event is specially open to Chinese who are interested to join the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), to serve their country and to protect the community,” he told reporters after launching the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) special recruitment exercise campaign for Chinese community at Palm Square at Centre Point shopping complex here yesterday.

Also present were Sabah Federation of Associations president Datuk Seri TC Goh and Sabah Youth Council chairman Kevin TP Lim.

“In the near future, Sabah needs approximately 1,000 police personnel to be deployed and stationed at the Eastern Sabah Security Zone ( Esszone ) and therefore such special intake, like today, is important to provide positive impact to the security of Sabah,” Hamza said.

Commenting on yesterday’s event, Hamza said about 327 applications had been received by Sabah Police Contingent since the special recruitment exercise campaign for Chinese community began in March this year.

“I am optimistic that more youth from the Chinese community will serve in the police,” he said.
