PENAMPANG: The native chief of Penampang, Andrew Lidaun, yesterday urged the State Government to consider raising the allowance of village heads in Sabah.
According to him, village heads in Sabah receive only RM650 a month in allowance.
“The monthly allowance they receive is a pittance. They are all earning below the poverty line,” he said, adding the government speaks of eradicating poverty but the village heads are paid so low.
He mentioned that village heads are important figures in a village.
“They perform important duties as village heads. If there are disagreements between the villagers, the person they would turn to is the village head. Village heads act as the mediator to help villagers solve their problems,”Andrew said.
And not only that, village heads are also considered very knowledgeable when it comes to explaining native laws and traditions, he said.
