BEAUFORT: A 41-year-old maintenance contract worker was killed when he was hit by a train at kilometre 95.1 Jalan Beaufort-Kota Kinabalu near here on Sunday.
It was learnt that the local worker was replacing the railway tracks and did not hear the warning sounds of the incoming train due to heavy rain and noise from the machine he was using.
Ir. Ismail Ahmad, acting general manager of Sabah Railway Department, said the train driver honked several times to warn the workers working on the railway track. However, the warning sound was not heard by the victim due to the heavy rain and noise of the machinery he was using.
A co-worker managed to jump out of the way when he noticed the train which was enroute to Beaufort from Halogilat station. Unfortunately, the victim was not able to escape in time resulting in him being hit by the train at around 2.50pm.
Ismail added the train needed at least 100 metres before it could come to a complete stop.
Meanwhile, Beaufort police chief DSP Mustaffa Maarof Mustaffa said the victim died on the spot from severe head injuries.
He added that the body of the victim would be sent to the hospital for a post-mortem and the police had classified the case as sudden death.
