PUTATAN: Twenty-five families were made homeless when fire destroyed their homes at Kampung Pasir Putih, here early yesterday morning.

Its is believed that the 2.30am fire started from one of the homes, quickly spread and destroyed some 17 closely built wooden houses.

State Fire and Rescue Department director Nordin Pauzi, when met at the scene yesterday, said his department received a distress call at 2.52am and immediately sent 25 personnel in three fire engines to the scene within minutes.

“Initial report shows that about 17 wooden houses were destroyed in the fire.

“Based on investigation, it is also believed that the fire started from one of the houses and quickly spread as most of the wooden houses were close together,” he said.

Nordin said his men managed to put the fire under control around 4.30am while no casualty was reported.

“We are still investigating to determine the actual cause of the fire and total loss,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin, who visited the fire victims several hours after the incident, said he would  make a proposal to the State Government and the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government ministry for a construction of a fire station in Putatan.

“We will talk to the State Government and Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, (Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government) for a proposal to build a fire station in Putatan.

“This is due to the rapid development in Putatan and there is a need for a fire station,” he said.

Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah accompanied Yahya to the scene of fire.
