KOTA KINABALU: Only 43 percent or 5.9 million people in Malaysia use internet banking actively for their monetary transactions.
According to Bank Negara Malaysia’s Link and Regional Office director Arlina Ariff during the ‘Experience IBG’ roadshow held here yesterday, 92 per cent or 18.4 million people in Malaysia have bank accounts and of the total, 74 per cent or 13.7 million have access to internet banking.
“Hence, our country has yet to achieve the desired stage for internet banking usage as many users lack the knowledge or confidence to use the facility,” she said.
She added that the roadshow was geared towards encouraging business owners to use internet banking and adopt e-payment for their business transactions.
At the same time, she also mentioned that cases related to losses due to internet banking forgery was very small and the banking industry had taken serious steps to ensure the safety of users’ information.
Arlina also disclosed that loss due to internet banking forgery was only 0.0002 per cent from the total transaction of RM3 trillion that was recorded in 2012 and the figure had gone down further to 0.0001 per cent from the total transaction of RM3 trillion in 2013.
To encourage members of the public to use e-payment, she said Bank Negara Malaysia had announced the reduction of charges for IBG (Interbank Giro) services early last year.
“The fee for IBG transaction conducted via the Internet and mobile banking has been reduced from RM2 per transaction to only 10 sen per transaction starting May 2, 2013,” she said.
She also said by March, all banks would be equipped with the Self Service Internet Kiosk to encourage more people to use IBG services.
