KOTA KINABALU: The floral arrangement designs of two local women won them a cash prize and a certificate respectively yesterday in a contest organized by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).
DBKK Puspanita president Datin Florence Madingkir presented the first runner-up cash prize of RM300 to Rosie Maillin, 41, for the contemporary floral arrangement category, and the certificate to Tarrinner @ Ruslina Rusidi, 34, for the traditional category.
Twenty-nine participants joined the floral arrangement design contest organized in connection with the National Landscape Day 2014 celebrations here at the recently renovated Teluk Likas public park yesterday.
The second and third runners-up were Roseline Ong and Rini Liduis @ Hashida Abdullah in the contemporary category; whilst Wan Nah Wan Yusoff and Zamdi Laila Selamat won the second and third places in the traditional category.
Consolation prizes for both categories went to Sainatul Hayati, Roshidah Rostan, Rosnani Buang, Siti Zamilah Latip, Surayani Harun, and Tati @ Mary Mambasul.
Rosie, a housewife, said her winning design was inspired by the landscape and greenery surrounding the Tanjung Lipat coastal area.
“I am very used to the scenery as I pass by it every day to head to the hospital in Likas for my four-year-old son who has thalassemia,” she said, adding that the prize money would be dedicated to him.
Rosie added that as a wife of a soldier, she spent much of her time arranging flowers at the Lok Kawi military camp.
Rosie and Tarrinner, a legal firm clerk, both said that they had been dedicated floral arrangement hobbyists since the early days.
Tarrinner claimed gaining inspiration from surfing the internet, and said that she had been watching her mother making floral arrangements since she was young and therefore decided to try her hand at the activity.
