SANDAKAN: The government, through its National Housing Council (NHC), is committed to provide affordable houses for low income citizens and civil servants.
Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said various development policies have been planned and scheduled to be implemented in the next five years with the collaboration of government agencies under the NHC.
“The issue of housing is one of the government’s priorities, therefore the government has come up with ideas and plans to ease the burden carried by middle and low income families and civil servants.
“With the proposal to build 1 million houses during these five years based on several housing schemes such as MyHome, People Housing Project (PHP) and PR1MA, the implementation of housing projects could benefit the target group,” he said to reporters after the handing over ceremony of PHP Sungai Manila, Labuk Road, yesterday.
During the ceremony, PHP Sungai Manila was handed over from Muhyiddin to Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman.
Also present at the ceremony were Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Bin Haji Mohd Noor, General Director of National Housing Department, Datuk Mohamad Yusoff Bin Ghazali and local leaders.
The project was built by the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government through National Housing Department at a cost of RM121,700,000 on 10.591 hectares of government land. Construction began on March 26 2009 by the appointed contractor, Tulangis Maju Sdn Bhd and was completed on December 31, 2012.
The five-storey development project consists of 14 blocks with 1,000 unit houses. Each unit was 700 sq feet with three bedrooms, two toilets, a kitchen and a living room. Apart from the typical units, PHP Sungai Manila also has several units for special needs people.
Besides that, the housing project is also equipped with basic amenities such as a multipurpose hall, kindergarten, nursery, management office, playground, surau and parking lots.
PHP Sungai Manila will accommodate and house low income families such as squatter dwellers, special needs people and single mothers.
