KOTA KINABALU: An old two-storey building at Kian Kok Middle School will be demolished to make way for the construction of a RM13 million eight-storey building with underground parking, commercial units, office lots and student hostels.

Kian Kok Middle School board of directors, led by its acting chairman Datuk John Su, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Special Tasks Datuk Teo Chee Kang on July 2, during which school principal Lim Chian updated Teo on the school.

Kian Kok Middle School is rated five stars by the federal Education Department based on criteria, including overall results, discipline, sports and academic facilities.

At present, there are 1,250 students in the school and intake is limited due to the lack of space and classrooms.

This year, the school will celebrate its golden jubilee. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the school, a foundation stone laying ceremony for the proposed eight-storey multi-purpose building will be held on August 23 in the school compound.

Invitation will be extended to the Chief Minister through Teo to officiate at the ceremony.

Meanwhile, the existing two-storey building will be demolished to make way for the multi-purpose building, which will have underground parking, a floor of commercial units, a floor of office lots and 190 units of student hostels.

A fund-raising dinner will also be held on the evening of August 23.
