KOTA BELUD: Sabah Umno deputy chief Datuk Seri Salleh Tun Said Keruak has rapped the opposition for trying to gain political mileage by claiming that Malaysia is heading for bankruptcy.

He said Pakatan Rakyat’s campaign to besmirch the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was merely political rhetoric and their exhortation that he should be toppled to save Malaysia, was baseless.

“All the opposition campaigns are merely political rhetorics which are not supported by data. In fact, if you study the actual statistics, you will find that what is happening is the other way round from what is claimed by the opposition.”

He said this when met by reporters after feting Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and Sarawak State Assembly speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia to a luncheon at the Rest House, here, yesterday.

Salleh, who is also Sabah State Assembly speaker, said all nations had debts, even the richest nation in the world.

“What is important is the debt ratio to Gross Domestic Product, which is lower for Malaysia compared to Singapore, while Malaysia’s exports  keep increasing since 2009 and higher than its imports,” he added. — Bernama
