KOTA KINABALU: Nine Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students were successful in their attempt to enter the Malaysia Book of Records 2014 for completing the longest treadmill run in a group in Malaysia.

The 260-hour non-stop run was completed by the UMS students at the entrance of 1Borneo Hypermall last Friday. The run was equivalent to 2,299.42 kilometres.

Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid was the guest of honour who officiated the closing ceremony.

Also present were UMS vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah, State Youth and Sports Ministry deputy permanent secretary Penyuki Matta, UMS School of Education and Social Development Dean Professor Dr Ismail Ibrahim, UMS School of Medicine Dean Professor Dr D. Kamarudin D. Mudin and UMS lecturers.

Jainab said she was proud of the students’ achievement, especially for taking UMS to a higher level by entering the Malaysia Book of Records.

“With this achievement, it proves that students in higher learning institutions not only have the chance to obtain good results in academics but also have the opportunity to be outstanding in sports.

“Organizing events like this is very important to find hidden talent among the students,” she said during the closing ceremony, adding that the activity was in line with the government’s call to encourage higher learning students to be versatile in order to compete in the real world after graduating.
