KOTA KINABALU: A local man cheated death when his Perodua Myvi car plunged four floors down from a multi-storey car park at Star City shopping complex here while reversing it on Thursday morning.

The 53-year-old driver suffered serious body injuries, including broken ribs and internal bleeding, but is reported to be in stable condition after being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

It took about half an hour for the Fire and Rescue Services personnel to pry open the vehicle on the ground floor of the shopping complex before rushing him to the hospital.

It was learnt that the victim was reversing his Perodua Myvi car from the parking bay, located on the fourth floor of the shopping complex, but overshot and rammed into a concrete wall before plunging to the ground level about 7am.

The impact of the incident also damaged the shopping complex’s basement and several shops.

Deputy city police chief Superintendent M. Chandra said initial police investigation showed the man had lost control of the vehicle which then rammed into a wall before crashing to the ground floor.

“The victim was immediately rushed to hospital and is reported to be in stable condition,” he said when met at the scene on Thursday.

Chandra said police were still investigating the case and a urine test had been conducted on the victim to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol when the incident happened.

The case is being investigated under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
