KOTA KINABALU: The government should improve the delivery system and efficiency of government departments and agencies, besides slashing public sector expenditures.
Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) president Datuk Michael Lui said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s recent announcement on 11 measures to cut down on public spending was a wise decision as it was high time to tighten their belts and cut down on unnecessary expenditures.
However, Lui said it was crucial for the government to evaluate the structure and work efficiency of government departments and agencies.
Many a time the number of civil servants in an agency was disproportionate to work efficiency and production, which was a waste of taxpayers’ money, he said.
Hence, Lui opined that the government should not only look at cutting down on public sector expenditure, but also on the human resource aspect, such as ensuring the quality of civil servants.
He cited Europe and Greece as examples, where too much money were spent to pay civil workers’ salaries but productivity remained low, causing debt crisis for Europe and Greece.
He also advised the people to be prudent in their spending and avoid wastage.
Meanwhile, Lui urged the government to consider the possibility of postponing the implementation of the new electricity tariff, amongst other things, in view of the increasing price of goods recently.
