LABUAN: No tsunami warning has been issued as claimed by some social media users from Whatsapp, Facebook and others.
A spokesperson for Labuan Meteorological Department Ahmad Rifaie yesterday said many callers had contacted them to ask whether a tsunami would occur within 36 hours.
“We received many calls and some asked whether a tsunami would occur within ‘six hours’. When we checked with our central alert system, no warning had been issued.
“We then referred the matter with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the agency that is responsible to issue a tsunami warning in our waters, but they also did not issue any warning.
“The Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC) also did not issue the alleged warning,” he said, adding that their department had issued a warning regarding second category rough seas where sea waves could reach as high as 4.5 meters.
The rough seas warning is for the areas along the west coast of Sabah, including Labuan, and the waters off Sarawak, and the warning will stay until December 31.
Ahmad also said many tsunami warning devices had been installed around the country’s waters and they could issue the warning immediately to the people.
Regarding the fish that miraculously jumped to the shore in Lahad Datu recently, he said the same thing happened in Terengganu the same day where the latter occurred at night.
He explained that the matter was still a question mark and a study was ongoing to ascertain the incident.
