RESIDENTS of Taman Luyang Phase 1 have called on the relevant authorities, especially the police, to increase patrol in the area where thefts are said to be rampant.

According to Sabah People’s Rights Association chairman Lee Pun Yee, it was reported that in one of the theft cases, a resident’s pet dog was attacked with acid.

“The pet owner’s family has resided in the housing area for more than 40 years, and most of the residents there keep dogs as guardians and pets. Though nothing like this has ever happened before, the owner of the pet believed that theft suspects were behind this incident,” said Lee.

He added that the houses in Taman Luyang Phase 1 were also more vulnerable to theft due to having no fences around their compounds.

This, he said, called for extra attention and patrol by the police to prevent more theft cases from happening.

During a site visit to the area with Lee’s deputy, Teddy Yang, Yang commented that the police should increase its security patrol and restore public confidence in the police force.

“The Karamunsing police station is only a couple of miles away from this housing area and there is also a police booth nearby. We hope  the police would look into this matter and patrol the area more frequently.

“Acid-pouring is not a petty matter. If these perpetrators could pour acid on pet dogs inside the house of a resident, they could do the same to the people as well,” said Yang.

Meanwhile, Lee said, residents of Mesra Apartment in Penampang have also voiced concern over the security and other problems in their area and urged the relevant authority to look into the management issues.

He said the residents pointed out to him that they had been facing a number of problems, and wanted the relevant authority to intervene after failing to get the management to solve the problems.

Lee was asked, during a meeting with the residents, to bring up these problems with the Mesra Apartment Management authority, Unisa Sdn Bhd, to help them improve or solve some of the problems they were facing, including security guards problem, auto-gate problems, and visitor-registration problems.

According to the residents, there had been a number of car theft cases, which they blame on the security guards assigned to man their housing apartment area.

The residents alleged that the security guards had failed to guard the housing area diligently and took their job for granted.

They added that part of the problem also lay on not registering visitors to the apartment area properly, which should also be the task of the security guards but had been overlooked.

The residents expressed hope that the relevant authority would  look into the matter by taking the necessary action.
