KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Commissioner of Police Datuk Hamza Taib confirmed reports that Taiwanese tourist Chang An Wei who was kidnapped from Pom Pom island off Sabah on Nov 15 has been rescued by the Philippines security forces.

“We confirm that Chang has been rescued and are still waiting for the latest development on the case,” Hamza said when contacted yesterday.

He said this when asked to comment on reports published by national media quoting IGP Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar as saying that Chang, 58, had been rescued by the Philippines security forces.

In his Tweet, Khalid congratulated the Filipinos in successfully rescuing Chang.

It was reported that Chang was rescued in Sulu and transported to Merin Hospital there.

“She will be flown to Zamboanga City tomorrow (today),” Khalid said, adding that the Philippine authorities would divulge more details and further development on the matter.

In the incident on Nov 15, gunmen raided Pulau Pom Pom off Semporna and shot dead Chang’s companion Lim Min Hsu, 57 before taking her hostage and fled towards Pulau Mataking near the Philippine waters.

Police arrested two men in their 30s in Kampung Bangau-Bangau, Semporna, at 3 am on Dec 1.

The duo did not have any identification documents and had worked on the islands around Semporna.
