LAHAD DATU: The district police here detained a 34-year-old man to assist in their investigation into a series of “explosions” on June 28, which turned out to be from a car’s exhaust pipe.

District police chief Superintendent Shamsudin Mat told a press conference yesterday that at about 12.21am on June 28, they received information that a member of the General Operations Force heard two explosions resembling gunshots that came from the Proton Iswara Aeroback car that was passing through the area.

He said another report received at 3.18am from the guard of a hotel at Jalan Sinngamata, stating that he heard three explosions, also resembling gunshots, from a Proton Iswara Aeroback car.

“No witnesses actually saw the flashes from any firearms. On the same night, a member of the GOF saw the vehicle that was suspected to be involved in the incident and a report was immediately lodged.

“Following the report and intelligence, police from the Crime Investigation Department managed to arrest the suspect and seized the car,” said Shamsudin.

According to Shamsudin, further investigation found that the explosive sounds came from the car’s exhaust pipe.

Shamsudin said the suspect from Klang, who had been involved in drugs and gangsterism before, admitted producing such sounds in his car.

“Further investigation found that this incident was not related to any firearms usage or intrusion as well as security threat to this district.

“Investigation is still ongoing under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code and Section 32(2) of Firearms Act 1960,” he added.
