KOTA KINABALU: The Consumer Affair and Protection Society of Sabah (CAPS) has called on the government to look into reports that many car parts in the market are actually fake, misusing several trusted brands as their camouflage.

CAPS deputy treasurer Donny Yapp said he had received several reports from buyers before claiming they were sold “original parts” when in fact they bought fake car parts masquareded as original, sometimes claiming to be original from Japan and from the national car maker.

“The authorities must do frequent checking in parts vendors, especially to ensure that originals are originals and other products are labeled as such so as to guide buyers of their alternatives

“Parts such as for the steering, brakes, absorbers and used tyres are such sensitive components to the safety of a car we must know what grade of them we are buying,” he said in a statement yesterday

He added stern action must be meted out to those irresponsible vendors. Donny also said CAPS hailed the government’s decision to defer the decision to take off all cars of 12 years and above from the Malaysian streets, at least for the time being.

Car owners and drivers were all relieved when learning the government has for now no plan to ban cars of more than 12 years, as had been proposed, from our roads, he said

“The proposal by the Institut Penyelidikan Keselamatan Jalan Raya Malaysia (MIROS) recently that claimed those cars of 12 years and above were not fit to ply our roads was good as they have own rationale but CAPS thinks there is more to road accidents than the age of any car

“While the physical condition of cars may cause a road accident, the burden lie more on the drivers and road users to be more cautious when on the roads

We must educate them on how to drive safely and avoid accidents,” said Yapp
