KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested two women who are twins, and are looking for two male suspects who were involved in several carjacking cases around the state capital.

Deputy city police chief Superintendent M. Chandra said the twins were arrested by police in Kampung Ulu while driving a stolen Toyota Vios car on Putatan Road on November 15.

He said prior to the arrest, a police report was lodged by a 59-year-old woman who claimed that two unidentified men drove off her Toyota Vios car that was parked in front of KK Plaza shopping mall around 6.50am on November 7.

“According to the police report, the victim had just entered her vehicle after buying groceries at the city market when one of the male suspects entered the vehicle from the front passenger seat and threatened her with a machete.

“The suspect then pushed the woman out of her vehicle and drove away the car towards Tanjung Aru,” he said at a press conference at the city police headquarters in Karamunsing here yesterday.

Chandra said that acting on the report and continuous investigation, police arrested the twins about a week later in Kampung Ulu Putatan.

The women, aged 23, from Kinarut, Papar were unemployed and also tested positive for drug abuse.

He said police believed the male suspects were also involved in a similar case on November 9 when a Toyota Vios car parked at Permai Polyclinic in Suria Sabah was forcefully taken from its owner and driven away.

“The incident happened between 8.30pm and 10.30pm when the carjackers approached a woman who had just parked her vehicle at the area.

“As the victim was alighting from her vehicle, one of the suspects entered the car from the driver’s side and pushed the victim to the front passenger seat while his accomplice got into the back seat.

“The suspects then drove the vehicle away with the victim inside, before dropping her off at the roadside in Telipok,” he said, adding that the woman sustained facial injuries when putting up a struggle with the carjackers.

Four days after the incident, police found the abandoned Toyota Vios in front of 1Borneo hypermall with the front passenger window damaged.

Chandra said police were looking for two men identified as Zulkifele Azamain @ Zul, 40, from Kampung Pirasan, Kota Belud and Nicholas Agustine @ Boye, 31, from Kampung Tampasak, Kinarut, who they believed were the suspects in both cases.

“Police also believe the male suspects have been involved in several car hijacking cases around the state capital using the same modus operandi.

“Initial police investigation shows that one of the twins is in a relationship with one of the male suspects.

“Police urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to immediately contact Inspector Azwal Azman at 013-697 9468 or the nearest police station,” he said.

The twins are currently being remanded to assist police in the case which is being investigated under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery.
